Interpret Relativizing Barriers with Oracles
Manipulate oracle classes and derive the precise limitation implied by contrasting oracle worlds.
Problem
An oracle TM may query membership in in one step; define and . Suppose there are oracles with and . Explain rigorously what this implies about any proof technique that relativizes, and what it does not imply about the unrelativized versus question. Also prove .
Prerequisites
Know the unit definitions and how resources are measured against encoded input length. Distinguish a conditional theorem, a reduction, and an algorithm.
Hint 1
A deterministic oracle machine is a special nondeterministic one.
Hint 2
Explore an oracle-NTM computation tree depth-first while retaining configurations.
Hint 3
A relativizing proof remains valid after every machine receives the same arbitrary oracle.
Relativization barrier
Full solution
For a fixed language , contains languages decided in polynomial time by a deterministic TM with unit-cost queries to ; is defined analogously with nondeterminism. Query construction still costs time, so polynomial-time machines can ask only polynomial-length queries.
The first inclusion is immediate: a nondeterministic oracle machine can follow the unique transition of a deterministic one. For the second, let an machine run for steps. Its computation tree has exponential size but polynomial depth, and every configuration has polynomial length. A deterministic polynomial-space oracle machine performs depth-first search of this tree, storing the current configuration, branch counters, and a stack or recomputation information of polynomial total space. It asks exactly the same oracle queries when simulating transitions. Time may be exponential, but space is polynomial. Hence
for every oracle .
A proof of “relativizes” if the same argument, with all machines granted an arbitrary common oracle , proves for every . Such a proof is impossible because choosing would contradict . Similarly, a relativizing proof of would imply separation for every oracle and would be contradicted by . Thus any successful resolution must use at least one ingredient that does not relativize, or combine techniques in a way whose decisive step fails in some oracle world.
The contrasting oracles do not prove either or without oracles. They are artificial languages that change the computational model, and the unrelativized world corresponds to no helpful oracle (equivalently, a fixed trivial oracle). Nor do they say every lemma in a future proof must be nonrelativizing; only the complete decisive reasoning cannot relativize throughout.
Oracle superscripts must be tracked uniformly. From one often gets by a relativizing simulation, but arbitrary algebraic cancellation of superscripts is invalid. An oracle can encode answers to hard questions, which is exactly why different choices create different worlds. The theorem is therefore a barrier result about a broad family of techniques, not evidence selecting one answer to the original open problem.
Checkpoints
Check both logical directions, halting of every relevant branch, and that output length and construction time are polynomial in the encoded input length.
Common mistakes
- Concluding that the oracle theorem proves .
- Assuming oracle queries of exponential length can be written in one step.
- Dropping or cancelling oracle superscripts algebraically.
